Or it could simply refer to the students showing that they have learned the desire skill. In a school setting an instructor may define the mastery level as the showing the best learners in their course. This could take on many forms depending upon the context of learning and performance. With each of these the designer will need to use creative and thorough techniques to make sure that they can observe a change in behavior.įor each performance objective that is written a certain skill level of proficiency must be determined. ![]() It gets a little harder with intellectual, attitudinal, and psychomotor skills. Generally it is easiest to measure a learner’s verbal information knowledge. The main purpose of this test is to help the instructional designer identify which portions of the instruction work the best and which ones don’t. Posttests: These tests are very similar to pre tests but they do not include entry skill items. This gives the learner a chance to rehearse new information, skills, and/or knowledge. Practice: The purpose of this test is to promote more activity and participation of the learner. Pretests purpose is not to measure a gain in learning. We do not want to teach or train a group of individuals on something that they already know, practice, or are doing. Pretests: Pretests are used to help with course efficiency. We will explain and distinguish each one briefly.Įntry Skills: These tests are used to measure prerequisite skills to make sure that learners have already mastered certain concepts before taking a course. There are four types of CRT’s: Entry Skills, Pretests, Practice, and Posttests. Four Types of Criterion-Referenced Tests and Their Uses But generally the design process is geared toward building CRT type models for assessment. For instructional designers NRT is useful for trial group selection of instruction. In other words CRT is specific and NRT is more general and broad. NRT are used to measure relative leaning in leaners in a larger area of content. Norm-Referenced and Criterion-Referenced TestsĬRT is focused on the specific goals and objectives within a content area. Because of my personal lack of background in designing or developing assessments I will focus heavily on the key terminology. This journal entry will focus on the concepts of developing assessment. The CRT provides allows learners to judge and evaluate their own work. This type of testing provides the instructor with feedback on the learning of desired material as well as components of instruction that need to be revised. ![]() Throughout this chapter it is referred to as criterion-centered testing or CRT. The chapter beings by giving a brief introduction to learner-centered assessment or criterion-centered testing.
